The chief officer roles are easy to recognize. Some roles might look similar, but when you check the definition, you can find the differences. Depending on company's size and structure, some roles are separated, but sometimes they might be merged into one role. For example some companies may have CEO and CBDO, but in smaller companies, the CEO role may be responsible also for business development.
CEO - Chief Executive Officer is the highest-ranking position in a company. CEO is responsible for the overall success of a company and for making top-level management decisions.
CFO - Chief Financial Officer is primarily responsible for managing of the company's finances. CFO's position includes financial planning, tracking cash flow, analyzing the company's financial strengths and weaknesses, management of financial risk, financial reporting etc.
CBDO - Chief Business Development Officer is focusing on identifying new opportunities and driving business growth. CBDO responsibilities may include developing a marketing strategy, building business contacts, elaborating business development plans etc.
CAO - Chief Administrative Officer supervises daily administrative operations of a company. CAO makes sure that staff follow the procedures, regulatory rules, regulations etc. Officer may be in charge of the specific departments, such as finance, HR, sales etc. The role is usually reporting to CEO.
COO - Chief Operating Officer oversees ongoing business operations within the company. COO role may look similar to CAO. The role is usually reporting to CEO.
CMO - Chief Marketing Officer is responsible for managing marketing activities in a company, including planning, developing, implementing and monitoring the overall business marketing strategy.
CTO - Chief Technology Officer supervises all the current technologies and also development of new technologies that help improve and increase business. If company doesn't have a CIO, then CTO is often responsible also for IT. The role is usually reporting to CEO or COO.
CIO - Chief Information Officer is responsible for the management and implementation of information technologies and computer systems. The role is usually reporting to CEO or COO.
