In Vienna, there are four main forms of public transport:
- U-Bahn - is abbreviation for Untergrundbahn. In english it means Underground railway, metro or subway.
- S-Bahn - is abbreviation for Schnellbahn. It can be translated as local suburban railway, operated by trains.
- Straßenbahn - can be translated into english as street railway. It is operated by trams.
- Autobus - it consists of local busses.
The difference between U-Bahn and S-Bahn is, that S-Bahn operates also beyond the city boundary. It is integrated with the national railway system and it connects the city with the nearby towns and villages. The standard public transport tickets are valid within Vienna. When you are travelling from / to Vienna International Airport, there are "extra tickets" required, because the airport is located outside the city area.
