If is it better to buy an Oyster card or Travelcard for public transport in London, depends on how often do you travel and where do you travel. Oyster card has a price caps, what means if you travel a lot, you will not be charged more than relevant price cap. In case of Travelcard, you can buy it for a specific range of zones, for 1 day, 7 days, 1 month etc. The price of Travelcard is fixed, so you can travel as often as you like.

The most of attractions and popular tourist places in London are located in zone 1 or 2.

For example:
Travelcard for 7 days in zones 1 and 2, costs £35.10
Oyster card standard daily cap for zones 1 and 2 is £7, but there is also a weekly cap between Monday and Sunday

In general, the Travelcard is good option in London, when you travel many times per day. You should check the public transport travel fares. The best option also may be to use Travelcard during period when you travel a lot and use Oyster card in days you travel rarely.
The advantage of London Travelcard is, that it is valid for the specific number of days, within the specific chosen zones, which is good if you travel a lot during a short period of time.

For example when having a 7 days Travelcard, valid for zones 1 and 2:
  • If you travel a lot every day, then Travelcard is a good option for you
  • If you travel 2 times a day, only 5 days out of 7, then Travelcard is not the best option for you, because currently it costs £38.40, but you will not use it enough and it expires after 7 days

The advantage of Oyster card is, that it is not valid only for a few days and you can travel within the zones you want. Simply said, you are charged when you travel. Oyster card also has a "daily cap", which is the maximum price you will pay in a day. Oyster card is better, if you don't travel many times a day / every day a week.
