Does more megapixels mean the phone camera is better and is taking photos with higher quality ?

Camera with more megapixels can create a photos with greater details. In general, more megapixels mean larger image dimensions and bigger file size.

One megapixel is 1 million pixels. To get the number of megapixels, you have to multiply image width and height. For example image resolution 8000 pixels x 6000 pixels = 48 megapixels.

But the number of camera's megapixels is not the only factor, that affects the quality of taken photos.

The good camera also have:
  • Quality sensor and lens
  • Good image stabilization
  • Effective image compression


If the image compression level is set too high, the photo quality is decreasing.
Having more megapixels simply doesn't mean the taken photos will be in higher quality. The features of good smartphone camera are:

  • Quality image sensor an lenses
  • Image stabilization - used to reduce blur. Can be digital or optical. Optical is considered to be better.
  • Resolution - good resolution can be considered to be 12 megapixels or more.
  • Focus - can be automatic or manual.
  • Aperture - some phone cameras are able to adjust aperture to the ambient light automatically or manually.
  • Zoom - can be digital or optical. Optical is considered to be better.
  • Software - can help to apply the right settings or filters, to make the photo better.
